Hobart Town was founded at Sullivans Cove when the first settlement, established by Lt. John Bowen at Risdon Cove in 1803, was abandoned. Lt Gov Collins brought a couple of hundred people from Port Phillip Bay, to establish the settlement in 1804. The first year of the settlement was pretty tough on the people, they suffered from scurvy, the cooler climate that they were prepared for and the lack of even the most basic resources, such as soap! Melbourne 200 years later, waterfront restaurants and accommodation suit every budget, and so you can come down to Sullivans Cove and enjoy the scenery, weather and a lifestyle Hobartians often take for granted. Hobart really is a beautiful city, sited on the Derwent River at the base of Mount Wellington, it really is hard to understand what it was like when Lady Nelson arrived with Lt Bowen, and a year later Lt Gov Collins in Ocean. |
