Anniversary, Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race The technology has changed but the challenge of another race crossing of Bass Strait remains for the hardy individuals who test their skills against the elements and each other once again on Boxing Day 2004. The race covers a distance of 628 nautical miles. This, the sixtieth race promises to deliver a range of yachts not seen since the years preceding the most testing race of all, in 1998. In fact, the field of 122 is the largest since 1994, the 50th anniversary of the race. Competitors vessels range in size from 33 feet to a massive 98 feet. Victorian entries number 27, and may well provide the winner. Most of the fleet with reach Hobart before New Years Eve celebrations in Sullivans Cove, where a fireworks display, the famous Taste of Tasmania and local attractions provide visitors and locals a bunch of things to see, as well as the spectacle of the Sydney Hobart and Melbourne to Hobart finishers. Yachts will be on display around Constitution Dock and Elizabeth Pier and the Marina until 3rd January. Hobart is in Festival mode from 27th December until 9th January, as the Annual Summer Festival takes over Waterfront streets and sidewalks. |
